Feelmax Kuuva Men’s Boot

One Response to “Feelmax Kuuva Men’s Boot”

  • For me, what the Kuuva has going for it is that it is the waterproof shoe in the Feelmax line. That’s the only reason I have them, as I wouldn’t choose to have a high boot otherwise. The sole is 2mm thick, which is certainly thin, but is also twice as thick as the Niesa, and you can really feel the extra thickness. Also, I’m not sure what the sole is made out of, but it definitely feels like a stiffer material than the Niesa sole. The Niesa feels like it’s made out of a puncture proof fabric. The Kuuva feels like it’s made out of a thin plastic. And even though the Kuuva sole is thinner than Vibram Fivefingers (which have a 4mm sole), the VFF sole is more flexible.

The sole of the Kuuva is completely flat with almost no texture on the bottom. The other day, I was walking up a fairly steep, wet, muddy-grassy hill, and my feet slipped out from under me several times. I honestly wondered if I would be able to make it up the hill. I did manage after three falls (not all the way to the ground, but to my hands). However, if those are the conditions you think you’ll be in regularly, you could probably get a pair of “boot (or shoe) chains” and be fine.

So those were the negatives. The positives are that this is a very thin soled shoe with no foot support. And, like I said, it’s waterproof. So you can walk through wet grass and keep your feet dry. (If you plunged your foot into a tub of water, it would get wet, don’t get me wrong – maybe water resistant is a better description.) I got these one size bigger than the size chart said I needed because I primarily plan on wearing them when it’s cold (and wet), and the extra size gives me the option of putting on thick socks (or even two pairs of socks). However, even when I just wear thin or regular socks, they fit fine – just roomy inside, which is nice. I have some fleece socks, and when I wear them, my feet stay nice and warm. Keeping your feet warm in winter when wearing thin soled shoes can be an issue for some people, and I’m one of them. I sure everyone’s seen that guy who wears long shorts and sandals all year round, no matter how cold it is, and for that guy, keeping his feet warm is clearly not an issue. But if you’re not that guy, you’re going to feel the cold ground beneath your feet when you’re wearing a shoe with as thin of a sole as the Feelmax soles are. So you might want to consider the conditions that you’ll be wearing these in when picking your size.

In conclusion, this is a good minimalist winter boot – probably the best out there. The Kuuva’s less flexible sole gives these boots less of a barefoot feel than Vibram Fivefingers or the Feelmax Niesa (and maybe other Feelmax styles, but I have the Niesa, so I can only speak to that one), but those shoes aren’t water resistant, and the Kuuvas are, and that’s important when it’s cold and wet. Plus the Kuuva is much, much better than any conventional boot. I’m glad I have them, and I wear them regularly now that the weather is colder.
